I've been working hard to be a part of this fellowship, it's called Challenge Detroit.
Recently I found out I was a semi finalist and voting opened up for Phase 3. I just thought I'd share this Link

Some Inspiration
I get inspiration from some of the most random things I see in the city.
I saw this on my drive home from work last week and I thought I'd share it on the blog. Sorry for not being up to date with new stuff, it's been really hectic with the new position.
A little about the image, it was taken in the North End area of Detroit which is right passed Midtown. Recently I've been seeing some of the old businesses being renovated and artists are moving in and setting up workshops, much like the way Eastern Market has seen along with Midtown the last few years (which later lead to the larger businesses moving into the area....HINT HINT). Keeping my fingers crossed!

Things are moving...fast
It's been forever since I had time to update this. It get's hard when you have multiple accounts (sorry for being indecisive).
Anyways, my old middle school, Cleveland Middle School, was shut down a few years ago. Recently I saw work being done to renovate it. The workers told me that a charter school bought the building and they are renovating it. Great news, especially for the neighborhood, that area has become unsafe especially since there was so much land just open to the public.''
At night you can see a security guard driving around the building at night, to protect the building and materials I suppose.
Pictures will be up soon!

Projects coming up
I've been really busy with all the work I'm doing with school and all three of my jobs....yes three...as in #3...
So right now the first one I'm doing will start on November 17, 2012, its a Saturday. my internship with St. Jude has given me that push to put this event together and bring a group of WSU students together to raise money for St. Jude Children Research Hospital during the St Jude Give thanks walk.
All the money raised will go to help the treatment and care of children with cancer and other destructive diseases, and the money covers all the costs so the family's that can't afford it will be taken care of.
If you can't participate, support our team!
After I started this internship I really have been thankful for all that I do have.
This gives us all a way to give back somehow. We tend to overlook the things we have and we always, ALWAYS take for granted, down to the most simple things like your senses and even being able to read and write.
Anyways, I got another project I'm working on, more independent but it should be up soon.

Initiative Science
I've been busy recently, (from what I've been told working three different jobs will do that to a person).
One of my jobs includes helping improve middle school and high school students in their English skills.
Initiative Science is a nonprofit organization that teaches students about science and mathematics through interactive and holistic learning strategies. The organization has existed for over 10 years and has partnered with different schools in the Metro Detroit areas and has helped numerous students.
Initiative Science has been helping Detroit area students achieve better test scores and grades in the fields of science and math for almost 11 years.

Recently the Initiative Science program has partnered with Star International Academy to
promote literacy in schools in the Detroit and Dearborn school districts. The
program is run by Andrew Raupp, and by other young, local adults, most of whom are students from
Wayne State University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

As you know,
Detroit and its surrounding cities have a diverse group of people from
different countries and ethnic backgrounds. Many of the new residents, especially, don’t
speak English and some of the youngest ones who are adjusting to things at such
a young age have a hard time keeping up in school. This is why Initiative
Science has started this literacy program this summer.
The students
involved in the program range from K-11 and include students from Latin
American countries all the way to the Middle East. The instructors are college
students from Wayne State University and the University of Michigan – Dearborn.

It's been a great experience, and I have honestly learned a lot about myself and how to instruct children, and it feels pretty good when I get to see that look of understanding in their faces.

Detroit Hip Hop documentary in the works
Just before Cinco de Mayo I got a chance to see a trailer for the documentary talking about the Detroit Hip Hop scene.
This Cinco de Mayo King MI 4 was held at El Bosque on the Southwest side of Detroit. It was great seeing all the familiar faces. Everyone stay ready for this documentary coming out soon!
